Winner of 2018 SciShortForm's "Best Institutional Science Writing" for Mapping the ocean with marine robots.
I'm a science writer and editor, which broadly means that I write about robotics, engineering, environmental science, earth science, physics, and other fields for a variety of audiences, including the general public. This involves synthesizing details from scientific publications and interviews with scientists into compelling and accesible stories. This career allows me to learn about a wide range of research, which I find really enjoyable, as it satisfies my curiosities about the world. I work at Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering, where I write and edit technical materials including news articles, newsletters, and web content for various web and print publications. I also develop and implement science communication strategies and lead project teams to gather relevant technical information for such publications. I was also directly involved in the writing and editing of over 300 pages of technical proposals in FY 2019, resulting in over $30 million in funding for the College. I teach science writing and communications courses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and composition and writing at the University of Pittsburgh. Previously, I worked as a Science Writer at the University of Pennsylvania's Communications Office, where I generated articles about natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and other fields for Penn's Central Communications Office, as well as Penn Engineering. I pitched story ideas, worked with deadlines, interviewed scientists, and synthesized and translated complex research into compelling narratives for the general public. I wrote content from scratch and also repurposed content for news stories, newsletters, and other communications and development purposes. Additionally, I helped handle media requests and directed media to appropriate faculty experts.
